In just over a years time we as wrestling gamers went from the button smashing days of WWF Attitude to Tables, Ladders and Chairs, Oh My! This wrestling game truly raised the bar on the wrestling game world, everyone stood back in shock as the pictures were released and the preorders began rolling in.
Game Play
The arcade mode game play is back from the first installment of the franchise. Love it or hate it the fast paced environment is back. For those with a passion for arcade style games this was a homerun hit, the game was fast paced and entertaining. This was one of the largest complaints of this installment. There was a divide within the community, the "pop" up problem was still here. After laying down glorifying moves the wrestlers would easily be back on their feet. Wrestlers have more striking moves with the inclusion of moves made by combining the X button with a horizontal and a vertical arrow button. Double team moves in tag team matches were also a new inclusion as well, and could be pulled off by placing an opponent in your partner's corner and making a turnbuckle move.
Audio
The dreaded walk in front of the Titan Tron is back for the second title. Wrestlers are not shown walking to the ring like other games of this time period. There is also no commentary. The background music during matches is back. One must assume that development was put into other areas of priority and the audio was left behind for the time being...
Graphics
The graphics from the first game are back for the most part. A lot of detail went into the make up of the game and it is noticeable. Wrestling titles are readable from the screen and it is easy to identify which title it is. The game was really smooth and offered a lot in the area of graphics, the game seemed to be cutting edge.
Season/Career Mode
The heart of the season form the previous title is back but the "pre-season" is no where to be found. Done with this game was something we had never seen, a feature that allowed players to have multiple players in a season mode. The season mode was fun and kept you entertained. The long load times were a negative but this was a progression overall.
Creation Mode
The Create-A-Wrestler was a huge improvement from that of the first SmackDown! game. The new mode was as if it were based off the WWF Attitude/War Zone creation environment. This was one area that series had outshined the SmackDown! series in until this point. A new feature called Create-A-Taunt was also added. This was just another weapon in the arsenal of things that made this title enjoyable.
The maker of breaker for this game is the game play gamers either loved it or hated it. There were two areas the game severely slacked, creation and audio but these were addressed in later installments of the franchise.

"This game featured a lot of new things we had never seen in a wrestling game before and was in many respects "ahead of it's time." Smackdown!2 offered us what we liked from the original and did a decent job of improving on its pitfalls." |
