Review
Well it's finally here the first wrestling game on the Gamecube and THQ and Yukes delivered another big hit. THQ and Yukes go all out and bring us some of the wrestlers that were picked up from WCW and ECW for the first time, Greats like Rob Van Dam, Booker T and yes the nWo. The game that was said to be is good as No Mercy for N64 and it is and so much more. THQ has brought us many great games for the Nintendo systems and this is just another feather in THQ's cap.
Game Play The game plays like a mixture between No Mercy and the Smackdown series. The moves were taken from Smackdown JBI for the Play Station 2 but they are a lot easier to reverse. The game does not have a very big learning curve it's easy to pick up on right from the start. You may lose your first couple of matches but after that you should have no problem playing with the big boys. After you get the basics down in a regular match you can explore the many other types of matches, witch include Hell in a Cell witch is full size for the first time, TLC match, Table match, Cage and many other seen in the Smackdown series
Audio The audio in this game is not very good. Its nothing compared to the SmackDown! series, but this is the first WWE game on the Gamecube I'm sure THQ and Yukes will bring us better Audio quality in future WWE games for Gamecube. The Audio is not the best but where the audio quality lacks in some of the entrances the graphics make up for it.
Graphics The graphics in this game are a step up from SmackDown! JBI. The wrestlers are incredibly smooth. The entrances are one of the key parts of a wrestling game and THQ and Yukes prove they can do it like no other can. This game has some of the most realistic entrances ever seen in any wrestling game. All the movement is fluid of everything in the game is smooth. The walking in this game is normal for those of you who played Raw for Xbox saw they walked like apes. This is the only reason why I like Wrestlemania X8's entrances better than Raw's. I can't wait to get a look at what is to come in WWE games with graphics on all the systems.
Season/Career Mode Now to start it off I included the Royal Rumble match here because to unlock the Royal Rumble 2001 arena toy have to beat a 30 man Royal Rumble, but I'll get to that later. Now Path of a Champion is the way a season mode use to be. Just match after match till you get to the title match. You go through each belt one by one. Each belt will unlock you a character and or an arena. I would advise you to start from the bottom because these matches are extremely hard. You run into Triple Threat matches, Fatal Four Way matches and some of them are specialty matches like Cage matches and Ladder matches. The Battle for the Belt feature is a new feature that has not appeared in any WWE games. You have over 40 belts some of witch are real belts from ECW, WCW and the WWE. The others are all made up. It run the same way as Path of Champion runs you have multiple matches leading up to the belt. After you win a belt you can have a friend come over with their memory card and put his belt on the line against your and unify the belts. The Royal Rumble match is the best in any wrestling game ever. It is extremely hard to win a 30 man Royal Rumble match. You throw someone over and they hang on the rope you have to kick them till they fall off. It is all depends if there going to fall based on the health meter. If its dark blue it means there hurt and they will fall. Yukes did an awesome job with this match and I hope it sets a standard for the next WWE games.
Creation Mode The Create a Superstar feature in this game was not very good. The coloring on hair really got me you have very limited hair colors. There are also not many parts in Create a Superstar either. I think if Yukes and THQ had more time this feature would have been better. On a good note it includes all the part you need to make everyone's favorite wrestler Shawn Micheals.
Overall THQ and Yukes did a tremendous job on this game. It is well worth the 50 dollars it costs. The game has incredible replay value and will be a game you will still be playing 6 months from now. If you have a Gamecube it's a must have and if you don't have a Gamecube go out and get one so you can have this game. I am looking forward to THQ and Yukes next project Smackdown Shut Your Mouth for Playstation 2 and their future games on the Gamecube.
